About the ASQ®:SE-2 Vietnamese Translation
Ages & Stages Questionnaires®: Social-Emotional in Vietnamese, Second Edition (ASQ®:SE-2 Vietnamese) was developed to meet the needs of programs serving diverse families and to promote universal screening for all children. The translation was completed by Trinh Le, M.S., a doctoral student in Special Education and Clinical Sciences at the University of Oregon. Ms. Le is a former lecturer at the Department of Special Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education in Vietnam. She is also the co-translator of the Ages & Stages Questionnaires® in Vietnamese, Third Edition (ASQ®-3 Vietnamese). Ms. Le worked to create a standardized Vietnamese translation that can be used across most Vietnamese dialects to meet the needs of parents and families in the U.S.
The translation was reviewed by experts from different regions of Vietnam to ensure that the translation is accurate and as widely accessible as possible for parents of different backgrounds. These experts offered feedback about appropriate word usage and readability. The translation was pilot tested in three programs by Vietnamese-speaking parents in Colorado, Oregon, and Washington.
ASQ:SE-2 Vietnamese Features
The ASQ:SE-2 Vietnamese CD-ROM has 9 questionnaires and Information Summary sheets in Vietnamese that parallel the Arabic, English, French, and Spanish versions. Supplemental materials to enhance use with families and aid in program use include:

In a few instances, wording of ASQ:SE-2 items was modified to provide clarity for Vietnamese-speaking populations. Items involving time were worded to use more natural phrasing than a literal translation (e.g., “Does your child cry for long periods of time?”), to provide explanation (e.g., “Does your child cry, scream, or have tantrums for long periods of time?”), or to include relevant dialect phrasing (e.g., “Does your child sleep at least 10 hours in a 24-hour period?”).

Dialect alternates are provided parenthetically for a few items (e.g., “Does your child cling to you more than you expect?” and “Does your child take turns and share when playing with other children?”). Given the differences between Vietnamese and English grammar, minor language adaptations have been made as appropriate to reflect Vietnamese grammar.
Normative Data and Cutoffs
ASQ:SE-2 Vietnamese uses the same cutoffs as the English version of ASQ:SE-2. Because the cutoff scores have not yet been fully tested, results and cutoffs should be viewed with caution and with consideration to language and cultural differences. Children should be referred for further assessment if parents have any concerns about their children’s development.
