Discussing Results with Caregivers Activity

Materials Needed:

Completed ASQ-3 questionnaire (if needed, use the sample at http://bit.ly/ASQ348Eng.)

Directions:

  1. Break into groups of 2 or 3 people
  2. Choose a role: Provider or Caregiver* (and Observer if 3 people)
  3. Review ASQ-3 results following the steps below

*Caregiver: Ask questions, be inquisitive, and advocate for your child

STEP 1: Begin the meeting by celebrating the child.

What do you love about the child? What things were observed about him/her? Parents/caregivers want to know that you notice and appreciate their child.

STEP 2: Review the completed ASQ-3.

Review items marked “Yes.” Celebrate what the child is doing first. Review items marked “Not Yet.” Discuss concerns noted in Overall section. “Can you tell me more about..."

STEP 3: Review ASQ-3 Information Summary Sheet together.

Results above the cutoff: “This area is a strength.” Results in the monitoring area: “This is an area where your child might benefit from more practice.” Results below the cutoff: “This area is below the cutoff. It may be a good idea to have a to have a specialist look at your child’s development in this area.”

STEP 4: Together, complete Section 4 of the Information Summary Sheet.

Make decisions about next steps.
